Forget the 4-Hour Workweek — Becoming More Requires Courage, Hope, & Optimism | Day 3

n a world filled with shortcuts, hacks, and now automation powered by artificial intelligence, it has never been easier to chase efficiency over meaning. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 30 years as a leader, operator, and builder, it’s this:

Shortcuts don’t build character. Shortcuts don’t build capacity. And shortcuts absolutely do not build leaders.

Today is Day 3 of 25 of my Holiday Season Give The Gift of MORE Campaign, inspired by my new book The MORE Effect: Thriving in the Age of AI. Each day, I explore a different idea from the book that helps us remain intentionally human in an increasingly artificially intelligent world.

And today’s message is simple:

Becoming More requires courage, hope, and optimism—not hacks.

Why The MORE Effect Is the Anti–4-Hour Workweek

Let me be clear: Tim Ferriss wrote a brilliant book. The 4-Hour Workweek changed how many people think about automation, lifestyle design, and efficiency.

But The MORE Effect asks a different question:

What if the goal isn’t to reduce our lives to the fewest hours possible… but to live with the highest level of humanity possible?

Because while efficiency matters, it is not the foundation of a meaningful life.

Not of leadership.

Not of growth.

Not of becoming.

The Unexamined Life vs. the Automated Life

One of my favorite quotes in the book comes from Socrates:

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Nearly 2,500 years ago, Socrates was calling us to slow down long enough to reflect, to question, to grow. That call still matters.

In fact, in the age of AI—where automation can handle more tasks than ever:

Self-examination is more important, not less.

Because:

  • Automation can optimize your calendar
  • AI can summarize your emails
  • Tools can streamline your output

But only you can examine your character.

Only you can grow your courage.

Only you can strengthen your hope.

Only you can cultivate optimism.

These traits cannot be hacked. They must be developed.

The MORE Leadership Framework (A 26-Trait System)

In The MORE Effect, Section Two introduces the MORE Leadership Framework: 26 human traits organized into four pillars:

M | Mindfulness O | Opportunity R | Relationships E | Execution

Each trait has a chapter. Each chapter ends with reflective prompts – How To Become More. Each prompt is an invitation to examine your life—because becoming More is not accidental. It is intentional, reflective, and deeply human.

We all have these 26 traits. The question is: to what degree?

That is your Frequency of MORE—your personal fingerprint of humanity.

The Five Principles of MORE (Your Daily Guardrails)

As I shared in Day 2, the MORE Effect includes Five Principles designed as daily anchors in an AI-first world:

  1. Time is all you have
  2. Protect what’s human
  3. Give the moment more
  4. Honor difference and dialogue
  5. Don’t let the device control you

These are not rules. They are reminders.

Reminders that presence is a choice. That humanity is not guaranteed. That leadership demands something deeper than efficiency.

Why This Matters Now

Artificial intelligence is accelerating the pace of life. Our attention is fractured. Our feeds are addictive. Our work is always on.

But the most important parts of life— courage, hope, optimism, generosity, connection— remain unchanged.

These are the traits that allow us to thrive. They are the traits that allow us to lead. They are the traits that allow us to Become More.

And they cannot be automated.

Give the Gift of MORE

This December, my invitation is simple:

If you know someone with untapped potential— someone with more inside them than they currently see— give them the Gift of MORE.

Give them a field guide for thriving in the age of AI. Give them a framework for becoming. Give them courage, hope, optimism, and the pursuit of all three.
